Founded by the Romans, Winchester was the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Wessex. King Alfred the Great kept Winchester as the capital of a
newly unified England, which it remained until after the Norman conquest, two and a half centuries later. It was the monks of Winchester that
William I commissioned in 1086 to write his Domesday Book. Winchester Cathedral stands on the site where King Alfred was buried in 899. It is one
of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the country and within its walls lies the grave of Jane Austen and the tombs of bishops and Saxon kings.
The old chapel of Winchester Castle houses Arthur's Round Table, hanging on the wall at the Eastern end of the Hall - it really is worth a visit
to Winchester just to see this!
